5 Reasons to Invest in a Book Coach

[fusebox_track_player url=”https://traffic.libsyn.com/secure/happyselfpublishing/Do_you_need_a_book_coach_Podcast.m4a” title=”5 Reasons to Invest in a Book Coach” ]

Have you been hitting a roadblock with your book project more than often?

Have you been thinking of working with a book coach but you’re probably unsure if that’s the right thing for you?

Then this one’s for you!

I’m giving you 5 reasons why you should start working with a book coach!

Now, most people who end up working with a book coach start working with them only after they face a problem.

Before getting themselves a book coach, here’s what most lone authors would painfully go through.

So at first, it seems things are looking up for them and the book project is coming along nicely until all of a sudden for several different creative factors, they start losing their grip on their purpose. Before they know it, they are slowly spiraling down the rabbit hole of irrational fear, perfectionism, external pressure, self-sabotage, to name a few. They want to get up. But as they do, everything is just slow-moving and it’s dragging them even lower into the abyss of unsureness.

Lone authors think they can go through a series of trials and errors without breaking… but always, in the end, they fall down!

That’s when they start thinking about working with a book coach. And only until then, their book project takes off!

Here is my request to you, please do not wait until you make some mistakes or hit a roadblock before you start working with a book coach!

From day one and the minute you decide that you are going to be writing a book, please start working with a book coach.

Here are the 5 reasons why I think every single person needs a book coach.

Reason number 1: Clarity. When you work with a book coach, it gives you absolute clarity on what should be your book’s topic.

How can you make your book unique compared to all the other books out there? Is the structure of your book good enough? Are you using the right language? Should you vary between passive voice and active voice?

All those things you’re confused about, all those (maybe even) long-standing dilemmas, can easily get clarified once you start working with a book coach.

However, the primary responsibility of a coach is not to spoon-feed you and tell you what to do and how to do things. Any good coach will ask you only the right questions so that you start walking on the path of clarity.

The second reason why you should work with a book coach is accountability.

Reason number 2: Accountability. I believe accountability is the single biggest factor that helps authors to finish their books, HOWEVER, most of us don’t have that self-accountability!

See, writing isn’t something that is compulsory or that is urgent. You know it’s important for you and your business but because it’s not such a pressing matter, most of us procrastinate.

When you have somebody to hold accountable for, you will, more often than not, end up finishing the book!

Now, your book coach can also act as your accountability partner because you know that before the next Coaching Call with them, you need to have finished the required “XYZ” expected from you. And before your next Coaching Call, you will feel responsible to work on those tasks assigned to you, again, by your book coach. Once you have this person who is guaranteed to ask you all the tough questions and who is not going to take a NO for an answer, you can also guarantee that you will finish your book on time following your book project timeline that you have agreed upon with your book coach.

The third reason why you should have a book coach is criticism.

Reason number 3: Criticism. See, a book coach is not only going to tell you all the good things, but they are also going to critique you. But that’s actually a great thing!

Most of your friends and family members will mostly have only praises for you, so it’s not enough to just show your book to your mom. You should also be working with a book coach who will not wait until you finish your book to say something. With every step in the process, you can bet your bottom dollar that your book coach will critique you.

Your book coach will ideally place themselves in the shoes of the reader and go through your writing. They’re going to tell you what’s actually working for your book and what isn’t. Are you dragging your point out too much? Is it boring the reader? Is the flow good and do you need to maintain that momentum? Your book coach will also look at the examples that you’re quoting, the case studies that you’re adding to the book, and they’ll tell you if it’s helpful to the reader or not.

Criticism, especially during your writing stage, is key to improving the quality of your writing.

The fourth reason why you should be working with a book coach is feedback.

Reason number 4: Feedback. Now, other than whatever your coach is going to tell you regarding your writing and all the criticism, they’re also going to give you a lot of feedback throughout the process of publishing your book.

This feedback could be on small little things like which of the 3 book covers look better for your book or it could be things like, which is the ideal lead magnet you should be placing inside your book. It could also be about which out of the different author photos you have is the right photo you should have on the back cover of your book.

For you, this is your first book project but for your book coach, with all their coaching experience with several different authors, they will always be eager to bring in all their expertise into your book project.

Take heed of your book coach’s advice during your feedback sessions, it’ll be of good use throughout the publishing process.

Finally, the fifth reason why you should be having a book coach is communication.

Reason number 5: Communication. Now let me explain this a bit. I’m not sure how it works with other book coaches but with Happy Self Publishing, we have dedicated in-house book coaches assigned to authors, who stay with the author throughout the project.

With Happy Self Publishing, the book coach will be involved with you on a weekly basis during the writing phase, but they don’t say goodbye after that. Since they know the book as well as you do, your book coach will stay with you as long as you will need their support in completing your book project, especially during editing and designing. Sometimes when it comes to communicating with other team members like the editor, you may have some struggles here and there. Probably your designer is unable to get your point regarding the concept of the book, this is when our book coach steps in and says, hey you know what? This is what my author is trying to say.

Communication is ultimately necessary between the book coach and the rest of the people you will be working with to ensure that your book project runs smoothly and successfully.

So let me do a quick recap of the five reasons.

Your book coach will provide you Clarity, Accountability, Criticism, Feedback, and Communication.

Now at this point, some of you may be thinking that you now understand the importance of having a book coach but still don’t see the true importance of getting yourself to work with one. Of course, at the end of the day, it will totally depend on you!

Let’s take for example this analogy, if you’re competing in a college team, then maybe you don’t need a coach, but if you are competing in the Olympics, won’t you need a coach?

The same thing applies to the book as well. If you just want to put a book together and you don’t really care about the quality then you can do everything yourself. Nobody’s going to stop you. But if you want to put together a world-class book that can reflect your brand image and help you attract clients, then you probably want to put that extra effort into putting together a book that you are proud of. And for that a book coach definitely is important!
